Chief Executive Officer
Rafael Cartagena, MD, serves as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for NAPA. Previously he was NAPA’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO).
Rafael joined NAPA in 2014 through the acquisition of Total Anesthesia/Anesthesia Associates of Richmond. His numerous promotions over the past six years are a testament not only to his incredible work but also to our organization’s commitment to developing and promoting our internal talent, including providing opportunities for those who join us through acquisitions. Rafael has held several roles across NAPA, including his most recent position as Senior Vice President of Clinical Services for the Southern Zone. He has been instrumental in the growth of several business lines and has shown effective leadership, as well as the operational and clinical capability required for success.
He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Cartagena received his medical degree from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and completed his residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
His professional affiliations include membership in the American Society of Anesthesiologists and the Virginia Society of Anesthesiologists.
When not at the office, Rafael enjoys travel and hiking.
